Choking on America

Choking on America

We the people
We the people want our say in America
Wailing blackbirds haunting notes
Waiting for the song
Waiting for the song
Trees weeping under turbulent winds and torrent rains
Bending bodies burden and stretched on a sad song
Melody unfurled with anguish hollowed out pain

We the people
Want to sing America
Crashing voices against amber red brown hues
Wading in the deepest water
While drowning beloved
Waiting for a song
Waiting for a song
Open our eyes with new lies

We the people
We the people want our say in America
Want to sing America
Caught in our throats
Choked on words
Caged blackbirds gotta sing
Waiting for the song
Waiting for the song
A sad young song
Of sad young men
Restrained by the land
Soaked soil and dried over stains

We the people
We the people want our say in America
Sing America the beautiful
Of blues our tears dropped
Of jazz our hearts stopped
Dark am I drenched in black
Wailing blackbirds sing a song
We sing for America
Hollowed out of pain
Singing for America
We the people want our say in America
Waiting for a song

We the people
We the people want our say in America
Blackbirds moaning on and on
Waiting to sing America
Waiting for a song
Waiting for a song
Bodies broken and set free
Winsome song of ‘tis thee I do sing
Breathe life into this body
Choking on America

We the people
We the people want our say in America
We sing America
We sing America looking for our daughters
Waiting for the song
Waiting for the song
We sing America looking for our sons
We sing unrestraint with impunity

What song do I sing for America
Sing of fruit dying on a vine
Sing of generations born and buried from sea to sea
Drowning on dry land
I want to sing America

We the people
We the people want our say in America
Blackbirds wailing unrestrained
Sing a song
Sing a song
Choking on our song of America

And the faintness of the last ripple
Echoing in the wind
Choking on the land and our tears of countless years

We the people
We the people want our say
